 14 Days Best Of East Africa Safari, Gorillas, Wildlife – DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival – Nairobi, Kenya.

Meet MuAfrika Adventures Safari Guide at Jomo Kenyatta international airport in Kenya and transfer to a hotel of your Choice for overnight stay.

Day 2: Nairobi – Transfer to Masai Mara National Reserve

Pick up from hotel at about 07:30 hrs with a safari briefing session  from one of our guides and then drive to the Masai Mara Game Reserve as you enjoy the scenic views of the Great Rift Valley – Masai Mara game reserve is in the northern part and is one of Kenya’s most favored game-viewing areas. The reserve covers 700 square miles of magnificent wilderness. It is the Africa of the imagination; endless reaches of acacia-dotted grasslands studded with hazy hills. Afternoon game drive to see the sundowner as you search for the Big 5 i.e. Lions in large prides, Elephants, buffalos, zebras and numerous plain game. Dinner and overnight stay at a tented camp / Lodge.

Day 3: Masai Mara National Reserve

After Breakfast, head out with a picnic lunch for a Full day spent exploring the park in search of the Big 5 with morning and afternoon game drives. – Optional hot air balloon safari can be arranged at an extra cost per person. The Masai Mara Game Reserve is arguably Kenya’s most popular game sanctuary. It is the most famous and most visited game reserve in Kenya. The film ‘Out of Africa’ was made to a great extent in this reserve. Virtually every type of wildlife can be seen at the Mara. A spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebra and gazelle from Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara River to reach Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June. The dramatic crossing of the river and the preying on the migrants by predators can be viewed from early July to August. The reserve abounds with birdlife since dose to about 452 species have been recorded. Later return back to your lodge / Camp for your dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru National Park

Early breakfast then proceed for morning game drives as you exit the park and drive to Lake Nakuru National park. Lunch at Flamingo Hill camp. Then proceed for afternoon game drives at Lake Nakuru, a shallow alkaline lake in the Rift Valley, renowned for its spectacular flamingo population as one of the world’s greatest ornithological spectacles. Although Lake Nakuru is primarily a bird sanctuary, there are a considerable number of animals to be encountered, such as many large game animals such as zebras, elephants and gazelles; this is one of our best chances of seeing rhinos. Lake Nakuru National Park was the first place in Kenya selected as a rhino reserve. Here is one of the few places where we can see Rothschild’s giraffes. Dinner and overnight at Flamingo Hill tented camp.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru – Amboseli National Park

Depart soon after breakfast and drive to Amboseli national park via Nairobi with packed lunches. Afternoon game drives in Amboseli National park one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya. It is situated close to Kenya- Tanzania border, The Park lies at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,896m) whose snow-capped summit presents a splendid view on clear days. Amboseli National Park is often referred to as “The home of Elephants’ some of the largest Elephant herds are found here.

 Day 6: Amboseli National Park

This day will be spent exploring the park for morning and afternoon game drives.

Amboseli National park is one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya. It is situated close to Kenya- Tanzania border, The Park lies at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa (5,896m) whose snow-capped summit presents a splendid view on clear days. Amboseli National Park is often referred to as “The home of Elephants’ some of the largest Elephant herds are found here. The Game Park also contains vast groups of Zebras, Wildebeests, Giraffes, Buffalos, Hippos and Antelopes. Also to be found in Amboseli are lions, leopards, Cheetahs,and many species of plain game.

Day 7: Amboseli – Lake Manyara National Park

After an Early breakfast, proceed for morning game drives as you exit the park and drive into Tanzania via the Namanga border. You will drive through Arusha to Lake Manyara National park with lunch enroute. Regardless of the direction we approach Manyara from, the view is always fantastic. Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake that is part of the Rift Valley wall; the lake is at the base of this dramatic western escarpment giving it a beautiful and serene setting. In addition to this peaceful setting, Lake Manyara’s main attractions are its rich bird life, tree climbing lions and its hippos, which you can see at a closer range than many other places. Lake Manyara also hosts thousands of flamingos at certain times of the year and has diverse vegetation ranging from savannah, to marshes and acacia woodland, enabling a variety of wildlife habitats including butterflies. We proceed to Burundika Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8:Lake Manyara – Serengeti National Park

After Breakfast then we proceed to Serengeti national park. Game is viewed as we proceed to Thorn Tree camp or similar for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9: Serengeti National Park National Park

Full day spent exploring Serengeti National park one of Africa’s most famous and Tanzania’s largest park covering 14,736 sq km and is adjoining with the Masai Mara National reserve in Kenya. With a wildebeest population of about 2 million and several other hoofed species (which include zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, topi, Grants gazelle, Kongoni, Eland, Kirk’s dik dik, klipspringer, roan, Oryx, oribi, waterbuck, buffalo, giraffe and warthog), the Serengeti is sure to attract a string of prey such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, golden jackals and bat eared foxes. Elephants are relatively scarce and the few remaining black rhinoceros are restricted to the Moru Koppies area. Serengeti also offers rewarding bird viewing with ostrich and kori bustard being common, a variety of larks, finches, and raptors can be seen but the most distinctive small bird is the lilac breasted roller. Day 10: Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater

After an early breakfast, we drive south to the magnificent Ngorongoro crater enter into the crater for a full day crater tour with packed lunches ascend the crater and drive to Ngorongoro. The Ngorongoro crater is the world’s biggest whole volcanic caldera at 8300 sq km and is arguably the most stunning arena. It is frequently described as one of the wonders of the world, not only because of its geological magnificence, but also because it serves as an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s largest populations of large mammals.

Day 11: Ngorongoro-Arusha-Kigali

After an early breakfast depart for Arusha. Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight to Kigali Rwanda. On arrival in Kigali Rwanda transfer to Galaxy hotel for overnight stay.

Day 12: Kigali City Tour

After breakfast, visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Ground, the handicrafts shops, the museum, and many other fascinating places in Kigali. In the afternoon transfer to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri for an overnight stay at Muhabura hotel.

 Day 13: Gorilla Trekking In Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, our tour guide will lead you to the park headquarters for briefing from the head of the park rangers. At 8.30 am local time, commence the memorable gorilla tracking experience. You will be left in the presence of the awesome mountain gorillas for about an hour. Take photographs and enjoys the antics of baby gorillas as they swing from tree branch to another. Gorilla trekking is the best wildlife experience in Africa. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay at Muhabura hotel

Day 14: Ruhengeri –Golden Monkeys – Kigali – Departure

After an early breakfast, Report to the ranger station for a briefing on your Golden Monkey tracking tour, later enjoy your lunch and transfer to the airport in Kigali for your Flight Home. End

While on a Safari always be sure to have all your belongings before checking out of the Accommodations to avoid losing things that may be important to you.

Transport: Our Safaris involve a lot of travelling on main Tarmac and Dirt Roads thus transport is provided in closed 4X4 Wheel drive Toyota Land Cruisers for all luxury Tours and the standard 4×4 Wheel drive Safari mini – vans for all Midrange Safaris. All Vehicles are provided with pop- top roofs for easy and excellent safari viewing. All passengers will have a dedicated window seat. Your professional English speaking and courteous driver / guide will be at your disposal for questions or translations.

For fly-in safaris, a combination of light aircraft and small planes ranging in size from Cessna 206’s to Cessna Grand Caravans and Charters but luggage is restricted. This is also Combined with the use of closed 4×4 Wheel Drive Vehicles  with pop-top roofs that pick you up from the Airfields since they are located far away from  the National Parks and Lodges that are usually in remote areas and this may involve some travelling on main tarmac or dirt Roads to reach the final destinations.

What to bring with you for a wildlife safari

  • Light Clothes as the sun does shine pretty bright in the National Parks
  • Torch is essential for safety purposes
  • Sunglasses to protect you from direct sun rays
  • A zoom lense Camera for photographs
  • A good insect repellent to keep those persistent Insects and Mosquitoes away.

NB: It is not a Guarantee to see all the Various Animals in the Parks especially Cats but there is a great chance that you might see them during an Evening or Early Morning Game drive because it is less hot around that time and therefore the animals are freely roaming around as opposed to typical afternoon hours when it gets too hot for the animals and they go under taking cover from the sun.
