Enjoy an adventurous Tour to the highest peak Wagagai peak (4321m) on your Hike. Mountain Elgon National Park is the second-highest mountain in Uganda and is home to the largest mountain caldera in the whole world. It is an extinct Volcanic Mountain that lies on Uganda’s border with Kenya. Though the Mountain is shared by Uganda and Kenya its highest peak Wagagai peak (4321m) lies in Uganda. The mountain has got three other major peaks which are Kiongo (4303m), Mubiyi (4210m) and Jackson’s summit (4165m). Mount Elgon is the 7th highest mountain in Africa at 4,321m and the summit is readily accessible for climbers with limited experience. The park is endowed with the most beautiful caves, cliffs, gorges and waterfalls in the country. The Bagisu and the Sabinyo who practice circumcision every even year are the inhabitants of the area. June to August and December to March are the best times to visit the park since this is the dry period. The park contains varied peculiar attractions of montane forests, bamboo, giant Lobelia, brilliant species of flowers, birds, bushbuck, antelope, wild cat, rock hyrax, hyena, caves, craters, gorges, the magnificent Sipi falls and many more. This 5 Days Mount Elgon Hiking Tour starts and ends in Kampala.

5 Days Mount Elgon Hiking Tour – DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: Transfer from Kampala to Mount Elgon National Park

Depart Kampala after your breakfast for Mount Elgon situated in the Eastern part of Uganda. Mt. Elgon National park is located near Mbale in the Eastern part of Uganda. The park covers 1,145 sq km. It is named after Mt Elgon (4,321m), an extinct Volcanic Mountain that lies on Uganda’s border with Kenya. Though the Mountain is shared by Uganda and Kenya its highest peak Wagagai peak (4321m) lies in Uganda. The mountain has got three other major peaks which are Kiongo (4303m), Mubiyi (4210m) and Jackson’s summit (4165m). The Mountain is said to have one of the largest surface areas of any extinct volcano in the world. It is endowed with the most beautiful caves, cliffs, gorges and waterfalls in the country. Hiking Mountain Elgon is very easy and requires no expert skills. Have a Stopover in Mbale for lunch. Later proceed to your Lodge or Resort for dinner and overnight. Meal Plan: (L, D)

DAY 2:Budadiri to Sasa Camp 2900m
In the morning after breakfast reach Budadiri 1250m, nearby Mbale town, at the gate of the Mount Elgon National Park. The simplest and fastest, way up the mountain Elgon is the Sasa trail leaving from Budadiri. After arranging the guide and porters, with food and camping gear. Begin the first morning’s climb which is steep and quick. This involves the “wall of death” named so for the frayed local ropes that, in previous years, was the only way to climb it. Fortunately, the UWA installed sturdy staircases up the cliff face several years ago, so porters can almost run up the mountain and you’ll feel the name is no longer deserved. Continue up the straight, steep path through the rainforest and the bamboo zone to the lunar landscape above. You walk to Sasa River Camp 2900m for the dinner and overnight. The distance is about 8km and takes an average of 7 to 8 hours, 1700m walk. Picnic lunch. Dinner and Overnight at Camp. Meal Plan: (FB)

DAY 3: Hike – Sasa camp to Mude Camp – 3500m
After breakfast at the camping site, proceed through the forest to the summit base camp – Mude Cave Campsite for dinner and overnight. It’s about 4 to 5 hours, 600m elevation. However, based on your fitness levels, you can trek straight up to Mude, rest for the night and head out for the summit, Wagagai, the following morning. Regardless, it is best to reach the summit in the morning, owing to cloud cover after midday. Dinner and overnight at the Camp. Meal Plan: (FB)

DAY 4: Mude Camp to Wagagai Peak 4321m then return to Mude
After breakfast, you walk through the moorland zone up to the main peak, Wagagai, and return to the Mude campsite for dinner and overnight. It may take 8 to 9 hours of elevation – 820m descending, you have the choice to return by the Sasa Trail or head onwards across the caldera. Dinner and overnight at the Camp. Meal Plan: (FB)

DAY 5: Mude Camp descend back to Budadiri and proceed back to Kampala.
After breakfast descend to Budadiri and back to Mbale Town for your Lunch, Proceed to Kampala to your Hotel or Entebbe International Airport for your Outbound Flight Home.
