On this 1 Day Rhino Tracking Tour to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, we leave Kampala at 6:00 am right after an early breakfast for a 3-hour drive North of Kampala off the Kampala – Gulu highway to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola District in Nakitooma Village. The trip is through the countryside passing homesteads and various roadside vegetable and fruit markets. On arrival at the sanctuary, you will be briefed by a ranger guide about the history and how to behave while on this Rhino trek. It is very critical that you heed the ranger’s instructions while on the trek because Rhinos can be aggressive if they sense a need to defend themselves. Depending on the location of the Rhinos, you may need to drive closer to their location before you start the trek to reduce the distance.
Once you locate the Rhinos, you can stay a maximum of one hour in their presence. Sometimes different families are within a distance of each other, in which case you will get an opportunity to visit more than one group, Capture pictures, learn their behaviours and return from your footwalk experience. The Rhino search is a 2-3 hour trek into the wild Sanctuary giving you a chance to view Rhinos at a close but safe distance. You also have a chance of sighting other animals on this nature walk if lucky like the Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Gazelles, Antelopes, primates such as Colobus and Vervet monkeys, duikers, Mongoose and many different bird species.
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is run by Uganda Rhino Fund and Uganda Wildlife Authority. Uganda was the home of thousands of rhinos years back and the main aim for establishing this Sanctuary was to restore the rhinoceros population in Uganda (Black and White). When the rhinos are mature, they are sent out to different national parks. Rhinos are slow breeders, giving birth to one calf every two to four years. These rhinos are the only wild rhinos in Uganda. There are five species of rhino in the world- Two in Africa, and three in Asia all endangered and the success of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary will play a key role in the eventual re-introduction of rhinos back into the wild in Uganda’s National Parks.
After your Rhino trek, return to the Restaurant for a warm lunch and drinks, relax and later, drive back to Kampala or Entebbe for a drop off to your hotel or place of residence. End of your 1 Day Rhino tracking tour of Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
