Day 2. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park – evening cultural village experience at the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village or Twin lakes visit

Get up early for breakfast and then proceed to the briefing point at the park’s headquarters for your gorilla trekking at 7:00 am and the briefing includes information about the park’s history, the gorilla groups, Dian Fossey, and the guidelines and prerequisites for gorilla trekking. On how to behave around the gorilla family, you will also receive advice and after signing up and being assigned a gorilla group, you will have the option to hire a porter. One of the ten gorilla families that have been habituated have been chosen for a gorilla safari in Rwanda. The allocation is determined by your fitness and this is due to the fact that some gorilla families move further into the bush, making hiking more difficult. The moment you encounter the endangered mountain gorillas is a great experience and it is amazing to observe a family of gorillas, watching the kids play, then the silverback, young children, and nursing mothers. Observe the mountain gorillas and heed your guide’s recommendations even when a family member gets close to you, maintain your composure and avoid making unexpected moves. You will return to the starting point, where your safari guide will be waiting for you after your hour with the gorilla group. The diver will drive you back to the hotel where you can eat lunch and relax. Later in the afternoon, the safari guide will pick you up and transport you to the Musanze-based Iby’iwacu cultural community to enjoy the traditional dances while learning more about the Rwandan culture. One of Rwanda’s top cultural institutions, the centre is currently known as the Gorilla Guardians Village where you will learn more about Rwanda’s culture and its people. Or you can opt for a visit to the Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo which are two beautiful crater lakes that are bordering each other thus being called twin lakes. The Lakes Burera and Lake Ruhondo are located at the base of Mount Muhabura giving off breathtaking scenery. Later return to your Accommodation as above:

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park-Golden Monkey trekking experience & Departure

From the lodge, you will again be driven back to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for the golden monkey trekking. The Golden monkeys are slender, smaller, and more active than the mountain gorillas. At times the golden monkeys come closer to the nearby local community gardens, meaning they are not always sighted far away from the usual habitat areas. Similarly to mountain gorilla trekking, you will be briefed before going for the golden monkey trekking. Although they can be seen perched on small bamboo trees, the golden monkeys will come down to the ground to feed. The trek takes 1– 4 hours and you have one hour to stay with the Golden monkeys once found. Don’t forget to admire the adorable primates while you take pictures of them as you like.
