The Mabamba Swamp is one of the Important Birding Sites in Uganda and one of the closest places to Kampala where you can go for the Shoebill Bird Watching Tour. The Mabamba wetland swamp can be accessed from Kampala by car or Entebbe by boat. The drive to Mabamba from Entebbe or Kampala takes approximately one hour depending on the number of birding stops.
This 1 Day Mabamba Swamp Birding Tour also takes you to Mpanga Central Forest Reserve for a Nature Walk that will reward you with spectacular views of different bird species and others that cannot be found anywhere else in the Country. While at Mpanga Forest, Expect to meet the Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Red-tailed Monkeys, flying squirrels, indigenous African giant trees, Bushbaby plus beautiful butterflies of the forest. While on this birding excursion to the wetlands, you will be taken on a canoe boat in swampland channels as you search for the rare and endangered Shoebill Stork as they enjoy their natural habitat and other rare bird species like the Saddle-billed Stork, African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher which are part of the ecosystem, desiring the lonesomeness in these large marshes.
If time permits, You may also visit the Uganda Equator where you will take photos and get involved in the Experiment that shows Uganda as one of the few countries in the whole World that the Equator crosses, this can also be arranged on your 1 day Uganda Equator Experience. After your morning breakfast, our driver guide will pick you up from your hotel or place of accommodation in Kampala or Entebbe and drive you to Mabamba Wetland swamp bay on Lake Victoria. The drive will take about an hour’s drive via the Nakawuka – Kasanje road. On arrival at the Mabamba Wetland swamp bay, you will join a local guide on a traditional Canoe paddling you through the Papyrus in the undamaged wetland swamp’s attractions narrow water channels surrounded by dense and lush swamp flora in search for this rarest of birds. Here you will have the uppermost chances to spot the rare shoe bill stork and other bird species such as the Saddle-billed Stork, African Jacana, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Malachite Kingfisher among other Swamp Subjects and dwellers. The Mabamba Bay is a unique and extensive marsh that stretches along the narrow bay – fringed with papyrus towards the main water body that is Lake Victoria. It is located west of Entebbe International Airport and lies between Busi Island and Buwaya Village on the mainland. After your Bird watching Experience, you will go for lunch.
In the afternoon, you will head to Mpanga Central Forest Reserve, one of the rare tropical forests surviving in the centre of the Country in Mpigi district and about 30 kilometres from Mabamba Bay swamp. Take part in the guided nature walk through the forest choosing among the three different trails to use. We shall be welcomed by the forest giants among which are; the Black and White Casqued Hornbill, Blue-breasted Kingfisher, Grey parrot, African pied Hornbill, and Great Blue Turaco among others. Expect also to meet the Black and White Colobus Monkeys, Red-tailed Monkeys, flying squirrels, indigenous African giant trees, Bushbaby plus beautiful butterflies of the forest. Thereafter, we shall have a quick look at drum making and may participate in the traditional music and dance activities at one of the traditional drum workshops as we head to the Equator If time permits.
While at the Uganda Equator, you will take photos and get involved in the Experiment that shows Uganda as one of the few countries in the whole World that the Equator crosses.
